Plumbing answering service: a burst pipe or a slow drain?
A plumbing answering service answers your line when you are under a sink or off the clock, and its most important job is telling an emergency from a booking. A burst pipe or sewage backup gets the on-call plumber now, with the shut-off advice your script gives; a slow drain gets a slot tomorrow. A live service does this by the minute; an AI voice agent does it in about a second at any hour and puts the job into your schedule.
Plumbing emergencies are expensive for the customer and urgent for them in a way that makes them call down a list. The first plumber who answers and gives a time gets the job. Routine calls, by contrast, are price questions and bookings, which are the easiest calls there are to automate.

Live answering service, AI agent or voicemail for a plumber?
| Live answering service | AI voice agent | Voicemail | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How it is billed | Per minute or per call, with a monthly bundle and overage | Per minute of the line, plus a one-off setup of the scenarios | Nothing, beyond the phone line |
| A call at 2 a.m. | Answered, usually by an agent working many accounts at once | Answered in about a second, same as at 2 p.m. | A recording nobody hears until morning |
| Ten calls in the same minute | Queue, or overflow to whoever is free | Ten conversations at once, up to the capacity you bought | Ten messages, some of them hang-ups |
| What lands in your system | A message, emailed or typed into a portal | Structured fields in your CRM or calendar, plus the transcript | An audio file |
| A question the script does not cover | A person improvises, or takes a message | Answers from your price list and rules, or hands the call over | Not applicable |
| Shut-off advice in an emergency | Read from your script, if the operator finds it | Given every time, in your words | None |
The rule. A plumbing company with a written emergency rule, which is most of them, gets the most from an AI agent: emergencies paged in a second with the details, routine calls booked. A live service suits plumbers whose emergency calls need a person to judge whether to roll a truck at 3 a.m.
Our agent does not open the call by announcing that it is an AI. If a caller asks, it says so plainly, and it never claims to be a person.
A burst pipe at 11:20 p.m.
- CallerWater is pouring out from under the kitchen sink and I cannot stop it!
- AgentPlease turn off the main water valve now; it is usually where the water line enters the house, near the meter. Can you do that while I take your address?
- CallerOkay, I found it, it is off. 42 Oak Lane.
- AgentGood. I am paging our on-call plumber with your address right now; he will call you back to confirm the time.
An illustration. The shut-off instruction is whatever your company tells customers.
Call the home-services demoWhat does a plumbing answering service cost?
Live answering services sell bundles of minutes or calls. An AI agent costs a fraction of that per minute to run, but it has to be set up on your scenarios first, and that setup is the real price. These are the public numbers, read off each pricing page on 9 October 2026:
- PATLive
- $99 a month for 50 minutes ("about 20 calls"), $349 for 200 minutes; extra minutes $1.99-2.29
- Smith.ai (human receptionists)
- $300 a month for 30 calls, then $11.50 a call; $810 for 90 calls; $2,100 for 300 calls
- MyReceptionist
- $110 for 70 minutes, $195 for 150, $275 for 235, plus a $90 setup charge
- ElevenLabs Agents (the speech pipeline an AI agent runs on)
- $0.08 a minute beyond the plan allowance; the page does not say whether the language model is included
PATLive's $99 plan covers 50 minutes, about 20 calls by their estimate, and each extra minute is $2.29 on that plan. A wet weekend can use a month of minutes. An AI agent runs at cents per minute once it is set up, so busy nights do not carry overage.
INITE Voice AI starts from $99 a month. Start is $99 a month (300 minutes included, then $0.25 a minute), inbound and outbound calls alike, set up from your industry template. Business is $299 a month (1,200 minutes included, then $0.20 a minute) with your CRM connected. A dedicated build inside your own perimeter starts from $25,000, then from $1,500 a month support. When should a plumber not use an AI agent?
- If you want every emergency judged by a person before a truck rolls, keep a person on those calls; the agent can still take the rest.
- A one-person operation that answers its own phone and is happy to keep doing it.
- Gas: if your plumbers work on gas lines, a gas smell follows your safety script and goes to the utility or 911 first.
What does the agent need from a plumbing company?
- 01Emergency rule and shut-off scriptWhat counts as an emergency, what the caller should do while waiting.
- 02On-call rotationWho to page and how.
- 03FeesCall-out, after-hours, what may be quoted on the phone.
- 04ScheduleYour booking system, so jobs land where dispatch sees them.
Plumbing answering service: common questions
Can an AI answering service handle plumbing emergencies?
It recognises them by your rule, gives your shut-off instruction, and pages the on-call plumber with the details. The plumber decides the rest.
What if the caller cannot find the shut-off valve?
The agent repeats your instructions for the usual places, under the sink, by the meter, in the basement, and keeps the caller on the line while the on-call plumber is paged. It does not walk anyone through a repair.
Will it quote prices?
Only what you allow: call-out fee, after-hours surcharge, or a range for common jobs.
Can it book directly into my scheduling software?
If your software can be connected, yes; that is part of the setup scope.
Do callers know it is an AI?
It does not announce it. If asked, it says so plainly and never claims to be a person.
Hear it before you decide
Two minutes in the demo tell you more than this page: interrupt it, ask something off script, try to haggle. Then tell us how many calls your line carries. More on how an AI phone agent works on a real line is in our guide to testing one.
