Construction answering service: catch the bid request while you are on the roof
A construction answering service answers the office line while the owner and crew are on site, which in construction is most of the day. It takes bid and estimate requests with the details you need, books site visits, passes supplier and subcontractor calls to the right person, and records it all. A live service takes messages by the minute; an AI voice agent asks your qualifying questions and puts a qualified lead and a booked visit into your CRM.
The cost of a missed call in construction is not the call, it is the job. A homeowner asking for a kitchen remodel estimate calls three contractors and books with the first one who calls back with a time. The contractor who answered on the first ring, even if it was an agent, got the visit.

Live service, AI agent or voicemail for a contractor?
| Live answering service | AI voice agent | Voicemail | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How it is billed | Per minute or per call, with a monthly bundle and overage | Per minute of the line, plus a one-off setup of the scenarios | Nothing, beyond the phone line |
| A call at 2 a.m. | Answered, usually by an agent working many accounts at once | Answered in about a second, same as at 2 p.m. | A recording nobody hears until morning |
| Ten calls in the same minute | Queue, or overflow to whoever is free | Ten conversations at once, up to the capacity you bought | Ten messages, some of them hang-ups |
| What lands in your system | A message, emailed or typed into a portal | Structured fields in your CRM or calendar, plus the transcript | An audio file |
| A question the script does not cover | A person improvises, or takes a message | Answers from your price list and rules, or hands the call over | Not applicable |
| Lead qualification | A message with name and number | Job type, size, budget range, timing, all in the CRM | Whatever the caller chose to say |
The rule. If most of your missed calls are new leads, use an AI agent that qualifies and books, because the visit is what wins the job. If your calls are mostly existing clients with complex job questions, a person who can take a careful message is enough, and voicemail is not.
Our agent does not open the call by announcing that it is an AI. If a caller asks, it says so plainly, and it never claims to be a person.
A remodel enquiry at 11 a.m.
- CallerHi, we are thinking about redoing our kitchen and wanted an estimate.
- AgentHappy to set that up. Roughly how big is the kitchen, and are you thinking of moving walls or plumbing, or keeping the layout?
- CallerAbout 150 square feet, same layout. We would like to start in the spring.
- AgentThank you. Our estimator can come Tuesday at 4 or Thursday at 9 to measure. Which is better?

Call the booking demoWhat does a construction answering service cost?
Live answering services sell bundles of minutes or calls. An AI agent costs a fraction of that per minute to run, but it has to be set up on your scenarios first, and that setup is the real price. These are the public numbers, read off each pricing page on 9 October 2026:
- PATLive
- $99 a month for 50 minutes ("about 20 calls"), $349 for 200 minutes; extra minutes $1.99-2.29
- Smith.ai (human receptionists)
- $300 a month for 30 calls, then $11.50 a call; $810 for 90 calls; $2,100 for 300 calls
- MyReceptionist
- $110 for 70 minutes, $195 for 150, $275 for 235, plus a $90 setup charge
- ElevenLabs Agents (the speech pipeline an AI agent runs on)
- $0.08 a minute beyond the plan allowance; the page does not say whether the language model is included
Contractor lines get calls in bursts around lunch and the end of the day. A live service bills those bursts by the minute: $349 for 200 minutes at PATLive. An AI agent's running cost is cents a minute; the investment is setting up your qualifying questions and connecting your CRM, once.
INITE Voice AI starts from $99 a month. Start is $99 a month (300 minutes included, then $0.25 a minute), inbound and outbound calls alike, set up from your industry template. Business is $299 a month (1,200 minutes included, then $0.20 a minute) with your CRM connected. A dedicated build inside your own perimeter starts from $25,000, then from $1,500 a month support. Who in construction should not use an AI agent?
- Large general contractors whose calls are mostly from known partners. A direct line to the project manager serves them better.
- If you do not want leads qualified at all, only a phone number to call back, a message service is enough.
- Safety incidents are not the agent's to handle beyond your transfer rule.

Construction answering service: common questions
Can an AI answering service qualify construction leads?
Yes. It asks the questions you set, job type, size, timing, budget, and puts the answers into your CRM with the booked visit.
What if the caller asks for a price on the phone?
It says what you allow it to say: a range, a call-out fee, or that pricing follows the site visit.
Is it worth it for a small contractor?
If you regularly miss estimate requests while on site, yes: one extra job a month usually covers the running cost. If you can answer most calls yourself within the hour, start with call forwarding and a good voicemail greeting.
Can it schedule subcontractors?
It can record schedule changes and notify your site lead. Rearranging the job schedule stays with your team.
Do callers know it is an AI?
It does not announce it. If asked, it says so plainly and never claims to be a person.
Hear it before you decide
Two minutes in the demo tell you more than this page: interrupt it, ask something off script, try to haggle. Then tell us how many calls your line carries. More on how an AI phone agent works on a real line is in our guide to testing one.
